Brotherhood is the single most important characteristic in this Order. It is what draws new Brothers in and keeps them members. It is what inspires us to be better, and reminds us how to trust. Can it truly be defined? Is it anything more than a feeling? Can it never truly be obtained? While some would definitely think so, I hold the position that brotherhood is easily achievable in any chapter as long as the following characteristics are always upheld and put on. This is not an extensive list, and it shouldn’t be. But as long as any one is fulfilled, a chapter will always find themselves closer together.
Trust is one of the biggest factors of brotherhood. We must be able to believe and place our faith in the people around us if we ever want to get better.
Character is a deep, multifaceted term that I don’t have a single definition for. But as long as someone displays true bravery or respect for the chapter and the members of the chapter, then character is met.
Forgiveness is incredibly important. We must be willing to overlook mistakes, to not hold something against our brothers. Only in doing so can we reach a better understanding of our shared nature.
Honesty, open and honest communication, is key. Brothers don't shy away from telling the truth, even when it's hard, because they know it’s better for growth.
Support is when we lift each other up. It’s about giving emotional, mental, or physical support when it’s needed, and that helping hand can make all the difference for someone.
Accountability matters. When we hold each other accountable for our actions, we grow together and encourage actual change.
Unconditional Love separates friendship from brotherhood. True brotherhood can mean loving someone without judgment and allowing yourself to understand the situation of any of your brothers.
Loyalty is the biggest part of brotherhood by far. We must be willing to stick by our brothers in good times and in bad, and to never forget the pledges we made to join this Order. Without Loyalty, who even are we?
Brotherhood is incredibly complex, and it's not something any one man could ever fully quantify. But next time you have an event, think carefully. This list is far from complete, and I leave it to you to think of more. What are some qualities you want to see in your chapter, region, even across the entire Order? What are ways that you can bridge the gap?
