With the Jewish New Year just getting started, now more than ever it is important to remind ourselves how lucky we are to be Jewish, and to ring in the New Year with the hopes of being an even better version of ourselves in order to have the most successful year yet! During this time between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is important to focus on reflection, renewal, and revision.

Reflection: In order to better ourselves in this new year ahead, it is important to think about our past selves. What did we do wrong that we do not wish  to carry on this year? Was it something we said? Something we did? Some way we made someone feel? No matter the reason, these sins should be released in order to start off this new year on a fresh note. It is a Jewish custom to participate in “Tashlish”, the act of throwing bread into the water in order to represent casting away your sins. This activity gives us the chance to think about our past year, and lift any wrongdoings off of our shoulders so that we can move on and start off the new year with a clean slate.

Renewal: After reflecting on our past, it is time to focus on the present. To enter this new year on the right foot, it is tradition to enjoy a sweet treat (specifically something with honey) in order to manifest a “Sweet New Year.” With so much war and hate overflowing the world, we need to take matters into our own hands, and be the peace and happiness that the world is in dire need of. Remember that this year is a new start - an opportunity for fresh beginnings.

Revision: Finally, after diving back to the past and focusing on the present, it is time to look into the future. What do you want to get out of this new year? What new experiences do you want to have? What new memories do you wish to create? What goals do you hope to achieve? During the ten day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, I encourage you all to make a bucket list, or write down all of your goals and dreams that you hope to take on during this new year. This is a great way to keep you motivated and inspired, and to help ensure you are making the absolute most of this new year.

By exploring our past, present, and future, my hope for all of you is that you are able to enter this new year on the right foot and with a completely fresh mindset. This year is our year, and by throwing away our sins, enjoying sweet treats, and setting goals for ourselves, this new year will be the best one yet!
