CELEBRATE

YOU'VE EARNED IT

Hard works pays off.

Celebrating the achievements of Alephs and B’nai B’rith Girls is one of the longest standing traditions of our Order. For teens who have worked hard and dedicated themselves to the goals of BBYO, and thereby, the values of K’lal Yisrael, the Global Jewish community, we thank you. It is through AZA and BBG International Awards that we hope to congratulate and honor Alephs and BBG for their accomplishments.

Applications for International Awards are now being accepted online and awarded with certificates and pins on a rolling basis. At International Convention, all award winners will be recognized during the State of the Order ceremony. Don't miss out on applying—award winners will receive special lounge access and unique opportunities at International Convention, too!

Explore the different options for awards you may be qualified for below. If you have any questions, be in touch with us at azabbg@bbyo.org.

One of the most historic and prestigious honors awarded to an Aleph, the Shield of David Award recognizes Alephs who have made outstanding leadership contributions, displayed a consistent commitment to the fraternity that is AZA, and have consistently participated across all tiers of the Order—chapter, council, regional, and international.

The Shield of David Award is based on a comprehensive point system that credits the following achievements throughout a member’s participation:

  • Fulfilling the duties of office at any level of the Aleph Zadik Aleph.
  • Acting as an event coordinator or member of a planning committee.
  • Participating in an internationally sponsored AZA contest.
  • Contributing to the Aleph’s chapter.
  • Fulfilling his responsibility of giving the experience of AZA to others through recruitment.

Every Aleph in good standing is eligible for this award. Awards are earned by accumulating ‘points’ granted for any combination of the items included in the attached spreadsheet. Upon achievement of varying thresholds, different lapel crest pins are presented in two degrees:

  • The Bronze Order of the Shield of David – 200 Points
  • The Silver Order of the Shield of David – 400 Points

Chapter Awards

The BBYO Stand UP Gemilut Chasidim Award

Gemilut Chasidim Chapter Award recognizes those AZA, BBG, and BBYO chapters around the world that participate in direct and indirect service opportunities in their community. Chapters must do both types of service to be eligible for entry into this challenge.

Direct Service: Direct service activities are defined by connections—working hand in hand to make a change. When your chapter takes action to help a cause or issue, you are participating in direct service. Direct service teaches responsibility, fulfills the Jewish values of tikkun olam, repairing the world, and gemilut chasadim, acts of love and kindness, and shows the immediate impact of their service. Examples: students’ working with senior citizens in an intergenerational project, serving food in a soup kitchen, and reading to young children.

Indirect Service: Indirect experiences involve chapters working behind the scenes or in a preparatory or support capacity for a direct service effort or initiative. These activities are centered on channeling resources to the problem rather than working directly with an individual who may need the service. Often teens do not come in contact with the people they serve, rather they support an initiative through education and advocacy. These activities bring resources and attention to problems, so we can speak up against problems worldwide. Examples: fundraising, advocacy-based work, collecting food or toys for disadvantaged families, and participating in landscaping in a community park.

Any AZA, BBG, or BBYO chapter in good standing may apply. The Gemilut Chasidim Chapter Award is earned by all chapters who have accumulated the necessary hours for any combination of direct and indirect service as stated above. Upon achievement of varying thresholds, different lapel crest pins are presented in two degrees:

  • Bronze award: Complete 15 hours of service as a chapter—at least 12 hours as direct service and at most 3 hours as indirect service.
  • Silver Award: Complete 25 hours of service as a chapter—at least 20 as direct service and at most 5 hours as indirect service.
  • Gold Award: The honor will be presented to one AZA and one BBG chapter who accomplishes the highest total amount of service hours across the International Order. This award is the highest honor a chapter can receive for their Stand UP achievements. Both chapters will be recognized for their achievements at International Convention.
