What is IC 2021?

Each year over President’s Day weekend, BBYO hosts International Convention (IC), the largest and most epic celebration of teen culture and leadership in the world, bringing together thousands of teen influencers, educators, philanthropists, thought and business leaders, musicians, celebrities, politicians, activists, and brand changing the world for the better. In 2021, IC will take an entirely new shape as this incredible event evolves into a hybrid-digital festival uniting thousands of Jewish teens online in hundreds of Jewish communities worldwide.
Taking place February 11–15, 2021, IC will offer round-the-clock programming with a range of experiences that are both specific to local communities and simultaneously shared global events. Through a groundbreaking and interactive digital format, participants will have unique opportunities to tour Jewish communities throughout the world, engage in leadership training workshops and community service projects, participate in global gaming tournaments, connect with popular brands, visit an online marketplace, hang out in elevated Jewish enrichment and social spaces, reunite with friends, and build lifelong connections. Additional highlights at this year’s event will include an inspiring Opening Ceremony, keynote addresses from a variety of powerful voices and changemakers who teens admire, an uplifting and pluralistic worldwide Shabbat gathering, and a colossal celebration of the BBYO Movement with top musical talent, celebrities, and more.

IC is for every Jewish teen around the world, including AZA, BBG, and BBYO members of all ages (yes, this year eighth graders can attend, too!), teen leaders and general members equally, BBYO Summer Experiences alumni, BBYO Passport alumni, and any teen interested in joining BBYO. There is no prerequisite experience or level of involvement required to join IC 2021’s community, and every Jewish teen across North America and around the world is welcome.

If you’re new to IC, check out the 2020 IC Recap Video to get a taste of the convention excitement here.

Who can attend IC 2021?

Teen Participation at IC
IC is for every Jewish teen around the world, including members of all ages (yes, this year 8th graders can attend, too!), teen leaders, BBYO Summer Experiences alumni, BBYO Passport alumni, and any teen interested in joining BBYO. There is no prerequisite experience or level of involvement required to join IC 2021’s community.

Teens based in the United States must be registered members of BBYO (unless otherwise notified or approved by your local professional), but you can register to hold a spot for IC and confirm your membership later. If you aren't a member yet, you can join BBYO before IC registration opens on December 17! All teens residing outside of the United States should be registered with their local BBYO program in their community and/or country.

‍Adult Participation at IC
There are myriad opportunities for supporters, stakeholders, alumni, parents, partners, and friends to experience the magic of IC. These events include annual gatherings of communal leaders enthusiastic about Jewish teen life, an immersive experience for BBYO's stakeholders and supporters, volunteer and partnership opportunities, and a series of alumni events throughout the weekend. Many partner agencies and teen-facing brands will also hold events for teens and stakeholders attending IC. If you are interested in joining us, please email the IC Leadership Team and check the IC website as adult registration opportunities become available.

(We’ll be done with plenty of time for Super Bowl kickoff, we promise.) This year it will be free, but you must be registered for IC 2021. What opportunities are there to meet new people from around the world?

Starting Friday afternoon (in each time zone), participants will gather for intimate and meaningful Leadership Labs which will offer opportunities to learn from and engage with amazing speakers from a variety of fields of interest. You will also be assigned a group of “roommates” to bond with, to share in some fun activities, and to win some prizes together by connecting with Alephs and BBGs across the Order. And of course, each chapter will offer local programming and regional community service opportunities. The digital IC 2021 platform will also offer a variety of lounges, hang out suites, activities, games, and other virtual spaces for teens to connect across grades, interests, and activities so you have plenty of opportunities to meet new friends like any other IC experience.

Are there funds available for chapter activities during IC?

Every chapter in the Order will offer incredible chapter programming, in-person where possible, or virtual where necessary during IC 2021. These programs will be open to all teens, IC attendees and otherwise, and are a great opportunity to invite prospective members to join in the fun and experience the excitement of BBYO! Additionally, every region/community across the Order will come together to support their local community through their own service project (i.e., a direct service project, a collection, or a philanthropy campaign). Oh, and there is funding to support these programs! Additional details and a short application will be available soon!

How will BBYO celebrate pluralism?

BBYO strives to create an environment where all Jewish teens can explore and cultivate their Jewish identity. We are crafting a schedule that will hopefully allow you to choose from a variety of programming to help you explore your identity while encountering new traditions, beliefs, and practices, and interacting with others from different backgrounds and perspectives. In planning our global Shabbat digital experience, we tried to balance our priorities of building community through shared Jewish ritual moments and our deep commitment to pluralism. Recognizing that we will be together digitally this year we welcome you to join us online as we celebrate Shabbat together from sundown on Friday through Havdalah on Saturday in a variety of time zones. We understand that some of the digital moments during Shabbat might not fit your personal Shabbat practice and we encourage you to engage in a way that feels comfortable to you. Please know that recordings will always be made available, materials for you and your friends or family to host Shabbat locally and off-line will be made available, and if you want to create your own Shabbat or Havdalah magic you can head over to the BBYO toolbox for DIY resources, printable Siddurim, prayer templates, BBYO Sings videos, and more!

What if I have a safety/wellness concern?

If something inappropriate happens on a call, let us know. Read through our Community Guidelines and Community Agreements to understand our commitment to creating spaces that are mentally, emotionally, and physically safe for all teens.

Your physical and emotional health, safety, and wellness are important to us. BBYO recognizes that these can be difficult times. If you are in distress or crisis, please visit BBYO's Safety, Wellness, and Inclusion page for help and resources.

What if I have a specific inclusion need?

If you have a specific inclusion need or request, please reach out to BBYO’s Director of Inclusion at ahandel@bbyo.org.

What is BBYO’s supervision and discipline policy?

BBYO’s professional IC staff have had background checks, have been certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid and are trained to work with teens and keep them safe. As a reminder, here are our Community Guidelines you signed upon registering for IC. We have a zero-tolerance approach to any violation of the Community Guidelines, and will promptly address any discipline matter that comes to the attention of IC staff.
